God I love this CD!I have TONS of world music and especially like French Caribbean and Cuban.

I only recently discovered the music of Cape Verde and find it's unique combination of African rhythms, guitar and primitive instruments to be especially stimulating, romantic and exotic. It is a true celebration of life as I find so much Island music to be. This and An Afro-Portuguese Odyssey are the two best Putumayo CDs as far as I'm concerned. I play them over and Over and OVER, and they get better each time! Where has this music been all my life!?! I've GOT to visit Cape Verde!

If a had recommend a capeverdean compilation, it would be "Cape Verde". I have the CD, and it's one of the few capeverdean CD's that I enjoy every single song. When I first bought the CD, I was wondering whythey had a funana (#10. Tchon Di Massa Pe - Zeca Di Nha Reinalda/JoaoCirilio/Blick Tchutchy) among those nice mornas and coladeras... but to myenjoyment it was a nice coladera (TI JON POCA" by Ildo Lobo) insteadof the fast paced funana.

The CD opens with what is possibly the best cut of this compilation, the hauntingly beautiful "Chico Malandro (Bad Boy)" by Ana Firmino and Tito Paris. Lyrically, he song deals with love, and musically itconsists of a series of returning choruses that alternate with verses. Thisdual form is further reinforced within each of the verses, when AnaFirmino's calls in a higher octave are followed by her own response anoctave lower. But it is that sense of bittersweet yearning that gives thissong (indeed the whole Cape Verde album) its mysterious quality. This moodcarries over to the next cuts, Boy G

I stopped listening to this album a loooong time ago.It was taking up space,so I traded it in.

Teofilo Chantre,Cesaria Evora (who was once Cape Verde's superstar, the barefoot diva),Nana Matias,Bana&Maria Alice are the highlights of this album. You can tell the difference between their styles.Maria Alice is a particularly powerful singer.

The song "Galo Bedjo" is supposed to be a funny song about an old man lusting after a young woman, but it's neither particularly funny nor memorable.

"Cape Verde" is NOT one of Putumayo's best country-themed albums.I reccomend "Mali" instead,or "African Odyssey."On this album,it's hard to tell one song from the other.

I thought it was another Brasilian style CD, but Cape Verde is simply unique. These songs are good not only for dancing, but for a relaxing evening. This is my first Cape Verdean music CD, but definitely not thelast one. It opened to me a new world of music.

I ordered this travel guide to Cape Verde because I knew it included information on my family's home island, Brava, and that the book was written by someone who lived there for a couple years. I am a Cape Verdean-American (both sides of my family) and although Callie is obviously not of Cape Verdean descent, she captured the essence and special qualities of Cape Verdean people--as well as the unique flavor of each island.

I grew up in the US with many relatives who were born in Cape Verde and even for us, it's sometimes hard to explain the differences in how we look, the dialects, why Crioulo was only a spoken language until recently and what makes each island special. Here in the US, the debate on what race Cape Verdeans are and do we claim a Portuguese or African heritage, goes on -- so for someone visiting the islands I imagine it's not clear at all. But please don't jump to conclusions either.

Callie's guide is well-written, respectful of local customs and POV--and she gives good advice and tips on how to have a good time and connect with local Cape Verdean people. I love that she included a section on language and phrases. Cape Verdeans are patient and appreciate the effort to speak to them in Crioulo (also spelled "krioulu").

To land on Sal and see the flat, dry land may seem like you made an error in plans, but slow down and enjoy the nuances. Once you get going, you'll see that the islands offer more than what you see in an initial impression -- and each island has something totally different. Where else can you climb a live volcano one day, and see live sea turtles laying eggs the next--and then hike through craggy, lush ribeiras in the clouds all in the same trip? If you prefer sitting on sandy beaches with a cocktail, then that's available on some islands, too.

Like we say, "Cape Verde, no stress."

Bottom Line: This is a down-to-earth, practical guide to getting around Cape Verde Islands and understanding something of the history and the people. Callie includes the names of some businesses and people who will gladly help you get around the islands, and have a fantastic time than going it all by yourself. Thank you, Callie, for helping people around the world understand our homeland and culture better.

This is the perfect CD for EVERY occasion:friends over, cleaning the house, relaxing with wine....I absolutely love it.It makes me feel like I'm back in Rio with a warm breeze and love all around . It never fails to put me in a good mood.My only complaint is that there aren't MORE songs so I could listen to the same type of music for hours on end without having to re-start the CD.It's definitely my most well-worn piece of music.

If you enjoy the Putumayo collections in general, then you will surely lust for Cape Verde. The beautiful singing (mostly in Portugese) combined with the complex African rhythms keeps your interest, whether you want todance or just listen. If you have the "Islands" collection, youcan listen to the two from tracks from Cape Verde. If you like those, you'll really like this new collection. Keep up the good work, Putumayo.

Lovely, lilting music that's also sophisticated and fun. If this is what Cape Verde sounds like, I want to live there! Of the Putumayo CDs I own, one of my definite favourites.
