Posted on October 31, 2010 Cesar Sabi says... Excellent maps and descriptions of hikes, places to explore and snorkel/dive sites. Restaurants, places to stay and some history of the island make this a very thorough guidebook. Posted on October 31, 2010 Delila Hollenback says... Informative, step by step, you actually can visualize walking the streets as explained in detail. All areas of the island were clearly covered. This guide was just what I needed to learn about the country before visiting. It was very accurate and useful describing hikes we took to Middleham Falls, Syndicate, Boiling Lake, Cabrits, Scotts Head and covering the towns of Portsmouth and Rosseau. It would improve with an index to the businesses, hotels and restaurants.Paul has done a good job---Rik Posted on October 31, 2010 Young Difronzo says... Having traveled extensively in the Caribbean over the years and invested heavily in Guide Books Mr Crasks book and the island of Dominica came as unexpected and hugely pleasant surprises. The book is stuffed with all the information needed and quickly gets across that the island is different from the rest of the other dirty, expensive run of the mill islands. We hiked on the island and Mr Crask correctly points out the challenges. He rates the hikes and gives accurate and necessary advice about the need for guides and the difficulty of some of the hikes. I am British. Mr Crask is British.I think, perhaps, that is an advantage I have over American readers. He expresses his likes and dislikes with a British subtlety that is not always obvious, but his opinions came across loud and clear to me. And they were good opinions! Let's hope Mr Crask extends his efforts to some of the other islands Posted on October 31, 2010 Thersa Lewison says... I'm on my way to Dominica as I write. Jonathan Bird's book arrived in my hands too late to influence my plans, but it wouldn't have changed much. The pictures are lovely, especially the under-water shots, but the text is less than meager. This is a photo album, not in any way a guide to Dominica either for a tourist or for an aesthetic traveler. I "humbly" expect to take photos on land that will match Mr. Bird's technically, and will have more meaning in the form of resonance with my memories of the actual places. The under-water pictures are beyond my skill, and earn the four stars I'm giving this book. Posted on November 1, 2010 Sherwood Kardas says... This DVD was a nice surprise. I liked the cycling journeys they produce so I got this one just for the fun of it (though this isn't a cycling trip). The excursion takes you all around both the Caribbean islands of Dominica and St. Vincent. You see and hear about junglely flora, fauna, the towns and seaside villages, waterfalls and stories and information from the native islanders too. If you haven't been to the Caribbean "down island" this dvd is a great place to start. I liked the narrations and the informal relaxing style trip. It was like traveling with friends and it makes me want to take a couple weeks vacation and see the islands myself. Posted on November 4, 2010 Queenie Ruark says... Paul deserves a chair on the board of directors at each and every Guide publishing company. his book is THAT good. I just arrived in Dominica and I always refers to his book when I'm visiting the island. Everything is there with all the needed information. The truth is, native Domincans you'll meet on your journeys keep praising Paul, saying he deserves a Dominican medal for his extensive and amazing work. Get that book to visit Dominca, you won't need any other one. Posted on November 4, 2010 Barton Walston says... Dominica was a beautiful island but this guide was not all that helpful and some info. was outdated or incorrect. Posted on November 6, 2010 Joye Weiner says... Watching this video made me feel that the film makers really enjoyed their trips to Dominica and St. Vincent. But the video really didn't meet my expectations. There is a need for a first rate travel video of Dominica, but this effort falls well short.Unfortunately, the coverage of Dominica was quite weak, documenting what seems to have been about a four day trip that concentrated on waterfalls and roads traveled. There was almost no information about the environment, culture, or towns. I would have liked to see more about the foods, the history, birds and other wildlife, whales, snorkeling and diving, native handcrafts, and other things. There were really no useful travel trips. The coverage of St. Vincent is better though, but still would leave someone planning a trip to St. Vincent wanting much more. Also, the commentary could have been better if obvious statements were avoided and some research was done prior to the off the cuff remarks on the video. The informal style is a nice touch, but a lot more effort should have been devoted to putting together an informative video instead of just documenting some nice trips.
