Alfreda Bruckner says...
Bermuda is tough to completely kill out because of the rhizomes and stolons, but if you're persistent and careful you can do it.Carefully spray the area with Round-Up (making sure to not get any spray or drift on your Hawthornes). You should get pretty good kill initially but there will likely be some Bermuda that escaped the initial treatment.Stay after it, spraying every few weeks or as you see new growth. Before too long you'll have exhausted the Bermuda's energy reserves and you should be rid of it.Properly mulching the bed will also help keep weeds out (and keep your trees happy). Also as the trees grow they'll eventually shade out the Bermuda (although that might take many years).
