When my family and I decided to vacation in Costa Rica, I bought several guidebooks. This is, by far, the best of the lot.Prices and descriptions are accurate, and I especially appreciated the e-mail and Web site addresses. This allowed me to finalize prices and make reservations without expensive phone calls. We continued to use the guidebook when we arrived in-country.The descriptions and historical backgrounding were accessible to all of us, and our four teen-aged sons often asked me to read aloud the "New Key" information about our next destination.

The New Key to Costa Rica remains my favorite Costa Rica guidebook, inspite of many new guidebooks to the area.It has a good track record (13editions), and the authors continue to research and present a wideassortment of exhaustive, updated, accurate information about Costa Rica. They manage to convey their enthusiasm for the country and to provide abalanced picture with some helpful travel facts, as well as travelers'cautions.Their manage to inject a viewpoint which is personal but fair. This is the guidebook I took with me on my trip to Costa Rica, and I foundit to be extremely useful and helpful (everything I needed wasthere--sometimes you have to search a little) as well as fresh andreadable.

As a president and founder of the Bed and Breakfast Asoociation and Central Reservation System for B & B's in Costa Rica for the past 10 years, I highly recommend "The New Key to Costa Rica". Theinformation provided is invaluable. Both of the authors have lived andtravelled extensively for over 14 years in Costa Rica.Readers couldn'tpossibly find a better updated travel book written, by the book's authorswho have experienced and continue to travel this wonderful country firsthand.

[...]The 18th edition of New Key to Costa Rica improves upon a veritable classic.

2006 marks the 30th anniversary of the guidebook which guides travelers toward

tasteful family-run lodgings and communities that are actively protecting the rural environment.

Written in a style that feels like a conversation with a travel guide, the New Key provides countless insights about the culture, the environment and the people of Costa Rica.

First authored by Jane Wallace, the book was then updated by her daughter Beatrice Blake and Anne Becher. Beatrice prepared this edition alone, but it is easy to see that the text has been guided by a number of joyful souls.

In 1992 this book was the first guidebook to use a green-rating system. In this edition, the rating system is downplayed in favor of focusing on community efforts.

Focusing on family farm visits allows Blake to show travelers the connections among organic agriculture, appropriate energy technology and diverse ecosystems. She writes: "By visiting these communities, not only will you meet some lovely people, but you will be inspired by their ability to put innovative principles into practice."

For travelers wishing to experience tropical nature, there is no better immersion than visiting the communities that are at the forefront of conservation.

Exciting adventure sports are not omitted. One of the highlights of the book is a review of the country's best canopy tours. Additional "adventure reports" showcase innovative efforts throughout the country.

Among the informative sidebars are capsule reviews of the Talamanca Ecotourism Network, the Sarapiqu

Great Family guide. We traveled and volunteered for six weeks with a 12 and 14 year old, and found the book invaluable.Everything was accurate and helped use get around on a limited budget.Bus schedules anddirections were great.Since we got back, we have compared it to severalother books for places we stayed, no other book compared. It has greatreviews of the national parks and the country Map includes the NationalParks.

This book is amazing! I am from San Diego and we flew into San Jose for a two-week vacation. We had very little planned. We knew we were going to rent a car and drive the entire west coast. I read parts of this book prior to our travel and I was by far the most prepared.I brought most of what she recommended and was very happy I did.Honestly, this book made my trip memorable. A lot of this information is hard to find once you are there. It has detailed descriptions of every place (big, small, popular, hidden, etc).Costa Rica holds a special place in my heart because of this book. I learned so much from it!I learned about the culture, environment, and people. My travel buddies were a little apprehensive about relying on a book. But soon, they were demanding to know what it said!Blake includes information about restaurants, hotels, cabinas, etc. Most of the time she even includes information about the owners of such places! Furthermore, her information about safety is impeccable.Pay attention to her view of a town and the beaches. If she says it has a lot of crime, you can bet it does.If she says it gets rowdy at night (Pavones), it does. If she says don't miss this, don't miss it. Her information was always right on. It is incredible! Please do yourself a favor and take this book with you to Costa Rica, your trip will be the BEST because of it!

I used a previous edition of this book as a guide when I was an exchange student in Costa Rica. This book contained everything that I needed.I spoke little Spanish in the beginning of my stay, and this bookhelped me to travel the country with easy. It contains information about everything from restaurants to travel to ecological information.Prior to using the New Key, I had never used a travel book. After using it, I wanted to buy a travel guide for every trip.Though I have now used several travel books, unfortunately, I have never found another book that is so comprehensive and useful as the New Key.This book explains a lot of inside information that one needs to know and hotel and restaurant tips.I highly recommend it.I only wish the makers of the New Key would do New Key books for other places, especially other Central American countries. I would buy any New Key book even if it were over my own home city so that I could let my visitors use it.I would buy the full set without hesitation. My few words can hardly do justice to this excellent book.If there were a nobel prize for travel books, this book would have won it. If you are taking a trip to Costa Rica, buy it!

Before my first trip to the beautiful country of Costa Rica, I bought this book.Little did I know that it would be my "bible" once I moved to Costa Rica. After 4 years of living and working in Costa Rica, I still turn to New Key for ideas on places to stay and places to eat.I own and operate an internet cafe and travel business in Playa Jaco and when people enter my business and have questions about where to go, what to do, what to see in Costa Rica, I just pull out New Key and help them search for something that suites their needs.

Of special interest, this book is dedicated to eco-tourism.Most other guide books will tell places that are off-the-beaten track, but New Key goes even deeper. The authors have spent tireless hours in search of small communinties that have decided to protect their property, their country, and allow visitors to see what a unique place Costa Rica really is.This in turn allows these communities to provide a sustainable form of tourism which has otherwise been lost in several of the top destinations.

This book describes in detail all the major spots in Costa Rica. From San Jose to Playa Jaco, or Arenal to Monteverde, Tamarindo to Puerto Viejo, or the Nicoya Pennisula to the Osa Pennisula, this book is in depth, up to date, and must have on any trip to Costa Rica.Pura Vida

We compared this book to Moon, Fodors and Frommers and it was by far the most useful and up-to-date.The New Key steered us away from the touristy places and hotels and towards tasteful family-run lodgings. It is more in-depth with descriptions than the others and is not just a categorized listing of businesses. We relied on it for majors decisions every day we were in Costa Rica and it rarely led us astray. So glad we had it.Thanks Beatrice!

I traveled to Costa Rica for a study abroad program with my college, and I found The New Key to Costa Rica to be the perfect guide book. I loved all of the recomendations the book offered while I was in Costa Rica: places tovisit, places to eat, places to stay, etc. So, when I planned to return toCosta Rica I consulted the book again. However, I do not suggest usingAmericas Tours and Travel to buy tickets to Costa Rica, as the booksuggested. I did, and I regret it. This is my only complaint about thebook. Otherwise, it is the best that can be offered.
